Just like last year, Celtic and Rosenborg meet each other in the preliminary rounds of the Champions League. Last season, the Scots narrowed to the longest, so the Norwegians still have an apple to peel with them. A good result in the first match in Glasgow is of course crucial.

Celtic:

For the Scottish national champion Celtic, the new season started early, because the greenwinds had to deal with Alashkert from Armenia in the past two weeks. The lack of competition rhythm did not bother the Scots, because the Hoops were able to win 3-0, both from home and from home, thanks to the French attack duo Moussa Dembele and Odsonne Edouard. There is a lot to enjoy for the fans anyway, because Celtic also shoots sharply in the practice duels in the preparation. Among others, Shamrock Rovers and Standard Liege were mercilessly placed at the slaughter with respectively 0-7 and 4-1 victories.

In an attacking way, trainer Brendan Rodgers has no reason to complain, but in the rear he will have to puzzle on Wednesday night. Jozo Simunovic is suspended, Marvin Comper is injured and Dedryck Boyata is still on vacation. Mikael Lustig returned to Glasgow last weekend, but is not yet at the desired level in terms of condition. “Every year it’s the same song with our center defenders,” Rodgers grumbled. A key role is therefore reserved for the young Norwegian Kristoffer Ajer, who knows his fellow countrymen well: ‘Rosenborg is a good team. Last year, they defeated Ajax in the preliminaries of the Europa League. They can really hurt you if you’re not 100 percent sharp. ”

Rosenborg:

Late last century, the Lerkendal Stadium in Trondheim was regularly the setting for a memorable Champions League evening. In 1997, the Norwegians knew how to beat Real Madrid’s Galacticos in their own field and AC Milan was also treated to a defeat in the San Siro. It has been 11 years since Rosenborg last reported in the group stage of the European champions ball. High time to change that.

However, it is unsettled within the club. This week trainer Kare Ingebrigtsen was fired completely unexpectedly. ‘Nobody really saw that,’ says the Norwegian journalist Jonas Giaver. ‘Assistant Erik Hoftun thought that Ingebrigtsen was joking when he told the bad news.’ With nine victories from the last thirteen games and only two points behind leader Brann, Ingebrigtsen did a great job and the players and fans walked away with him. The Dutchman Rini Coolen, who until recently was responsible for youth policy at the club, has been appointed interim manager. It is up to him to guide the Norwegians to the last preliminary round. In any case, he can call on star player Niklas Bendtner, who last week hit his team deep in injury time just after the Icelandic Valur via a rake penalty. The fast wing pits Samuel Adegbenro, who last season dealt Ajax with three goals personally, however, is in the rag basket.
