B. Monchengladbach – Shakhtar Donetsk SOCCER PICKS

All the ingredients for a wonderful Champions League evening will be present this Wednesday, when Borussia Mönchengladbach takes on Shakhtar Donetsk in its own Borussia Park. Both teams are doing surprisingly well in group B, so the winner of this mutual encounter takes a huge step towards wintering in the Champions League.

Borussia Mönchengladbach:

In almost every edition of the Champions League, there is a team that succeeds in putting the established order on fire with attractive football. Two years ago that role was reserved for Ajax, and last year Atalanta managed to conquer the hearts of many European football fans. This time it could be Borussia Mönchengladbach’s turn. The Germans are doing extremely well in a very tough group on paper, and after a draw against Real Madrid (2-2) and Inter (2-2) and a monster victory three weeks ago at Shakthar Donetsk (0-6), namely even call group B leader.

If Borussia Mönchengladbach manages to defeat Shakhtar Donetsk again, a ticket to the eighth finals can hardly escape. However, it is far from that, because the home club has to miss several important players on Wednesday evening. Attacker Alassane Plea, who claimed the lead role against Shakhtar Donetsk three weeks ago with a hat trick, is in quarantine after a positive corona test. In addition, trainer Marco Rose has to make do with Ramy Bensebaini and Jonas Hofmann without his fixed left and right back. The good news is that star player Denis Zakaria finally made his comeback after a lingering knee injury against Augsburg (1-1) last weekend, but of course he still lacks match rhythm.

Shakhtar Donetsk:

Shakhtar Donetsk is also on a promising Champions League adventure. The Ukrainians immediately managed to stunt in their first group match by winning 2-3 at Real Madrid, and then also managed to keep Inter to a goalless draw. At home against Borussia Mönchengladbach, however, the men of trainer Luis Castro had a total off-day, with a hopeless 0-6 defeat as a result. So the Ukrainians still have a bone to pick with the Germans.

The 0-6 defeat was of course hard, but Shakhtar Donetsk showed mental resilience by winning the top match in his own country against arch-rival Dynamo Kiev with no less than 0-3 a few days later. In addition, the selection of the Ukrainians is now largely complete again, after they were previously badly hit by the corona virus. So things are going in the right direction again with De Mijnwerken, who have several rough Brazilian diamonds in their ranks with players such as Tete, Marcos Antonio and Marcos Cipriano.
