It has always been the salt in the cup soup when amateurs await the big clubs. This season, however, only two regional league teams made it into the second round of the club cup. Among other things, this is SV Elversberg, who is expecting Borussia Mönchengladbach on Tuesday. The fourth division will do everything possible to eliminate the second professional club after FC St. Pauli.
The well-known bookmakers give the outsider almost no chances. Quotations of well over 50.00 on a success of the SVE speak for themselves. Nobody expects the regional division to win, but the cup has its own much-cited laws. Nevertheless, the SVE’s chances of hibernating in the DFB Cup are almost zero.
The underdogs usually have a chance if you are currently in good shape in the league and you are confident. But that is not the case at the moment. This fact is reflected in the odds comparison of the betting base. Therefore, there is only one prediction in the match between Elversberg and Gladbach, namely that of a victory for the Bundesliga club.
However, the Gladbachers are not in outstanding shape at the moment. The many games in the Bundesliga and the Champions League have left their mark. Elversberg :
Before the season, SV Elversberg was traded as one of the top favorites in the Regionalliga Südwest for promotion to the third division. Horst Steffen’s team did justice to these ambitions to some extent. In the table of the fourth division, SVE is currently in fifth place. The gap to the top is currently four points. Everything is still there for the Elversbergers.
However, they have gambled away a better starting position in the last few weeks. There has not been a defeat in seven games, but in the last four games it was only enough to split points. Therefore, there is not much to suggest that in the cup game between Elversberg and Gladbach the odds on a home win of the outsider should be alluded to.
Last weekend the gap to the leaders could have been significantly reduced. Elversberg was the guest of the front runners, the second team of SC Freiburg. Luca Schnellbacher was even there after 20 minutes with the 1-0 lead for SVE. Before the break, however, the Breisgauer were able to equalize to the 1: 1 final score.
In terms of personnel, things could look a little better with the von der Kaiserlinde team. Horst Steffen will have to do without Fabian Baumgärtel (abdominal muscles), Robin Fellhauer (thighs), Maurice Neubauer (knee) and Laurin von Piechowski (torn muscle fiber) on Tuesday. Therefore, the media assume that the same starting XI will appear as at the weekend.
Gladbach :
How much is Borussia Mönchengladbach still able to get involved in a cup game with a fourth division club? On the one hand it was against Real Madrid and Inter Milan in the Champions League, in the Bundesliga you play against Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund or RB Leipzig and now you have to compete at SV Elversberg.
But it is the opportunity to take another win before the short Christmas break, because there has not been one for a long time. Borussia has been without a win for six games. The break comes absolutely at the right time. Nevertheless, in the match between Elversberg and Gladbach, the prognosis must be a victory for the Bundesliga club.
Last weekend they did themselves a great disservice when they lost 2-1 at home to TSG Hoffenheim. Lars Stindl initially gave his team a 1-0 lead with a penalty. In the closing stages, Marcus Thuram saw the red card after a spitting attack and Hoffenheim still managed to win 2-1.
Officially, the expulsion has no effect on the DFB-Pokal, but it can be assumed that the Frenchman will be given a break. In addition, a lush rotation is expected. With Ramy Bensebaini, Mamadou Doucoure, Alassane Plea and Julio Villalba, some actors are missing anyway. Other regular players will only have to play in an emergency.
