On November 18, from 19:45 pm, the Greek national receives the visit of Finland, in the 10th round of the preliminary groups from Euro 2020. The qualifications are almost completed, and the match on Spiros Louis, in Athens, has no stake in Ranking: Greece is eliminated, while the Nordic national has obtained a historic qualification at the final tournament next year!
Italy won Group J with 9 wins in all the matches, but Finland was the pleasant surprise of the qualifiers, with an impressive record: 6 wins in 9 matches, with 18 points accumulated and 15-8 goals. Pukki’s presence on the field gave great confidence to the white-blue, who can no longer reach the ranking of Greece, now in 3rd place (goal 10-13) – 11 points earned.
Greece woke up late in these preliminaries. The Greeks have two consecutive victories, with Bosnia (2-1) and Armenia (1-0), the main rivals in the second place qualification. But the course of 2019 was very weak for the Greek national, who failed to maintain their defensive lucidity in key derby moments. Instead, Finland started the preliminaries very well and allowed themselves to transfer points with Italy (1-2) and Bosnia (1-4) in the final rounds. However, the Nordics managed well the duels accessible with Armenia and Liechtenstein, won on their own ground by 3-0.
Finland has won 3 of the last four straight duels with Greece, twice with 1-0 and once with 2-0. In the tour match, played in Helsinki, Pukki’s goal (’52 – penalty) decided the match, given that Greece had 55% possession and played more on goal than the host. Since the Finns are already qualified, it would not surprise us to see a “victory” for the Greeks.
